Background
S19BP, also known as RPS19BP1 (ribosomal protein S19 binding protein 1) or AROS, is a 136 amino acid protein that localizes to the nucleolus and belongs to the AROS family. Expressed in a variety of tissues, S19BP interacts with Ribosomal Protein S19 and SIRT1 and is thought to directly regulate SIRT1 function, specifically enhancing the SIRT1-mediated deacetylation of p53 and inhibiting p53-induced transcriptional activity. The gene encoding S19BP maps to human chromosome 22, which houses over 500 genes and is the second smallest human chromosome. Mutations in several of the genes that map to chromosome 22 are involved in the development of Phelan-McDermid syndrome, Neurofibromatosis type 2, autism and schizophrenia.
